E-scooters with a seat in Switzerland
Are scooters with a seat allowed in Switzerland? It depends on the speed, power and equipment of the model. There is no blanket answer.
E-scooter with a seat: is it worth it?
In short: it depends on your route. You don't need a seat to ride to the bakery. But if you ride to work every day or go on longer trips, after 20 minutes of standing you'll quickly understand why seats exist.
When a seat makes sense
On short trips under 5 km a seat is more ballast than benefit, because the scooter gets bigger and harder to store. Once you regularly ride 10, 15 km or more, the picture changes. Your legs get tired, so does your back, and that's exactly where a seat pays off. This is especially true for the more powerful models with a big battery, which are built for longer distances anyway. If you're buying a scooter for commuting, you should at least consider a seat.
What really matters when buying
The battery is only half the story. The manufacturer's range figure almost never holds up in everyday riding, because weight, hills, temperature and riding style have a huge effect. Realistically, expect 20-30% less than the stated range.
Just as important: suspension and tyres. A scooter with a seat but without decent suspension is less comfortable than one without a seat but with good suspension, and that's often underestimated. And with stronger motors, good brakes are not a nice-to-have but a must. If you ride faster or weigh more, you need more braking power, otherwise it gets dangerous.
One point many people overlook: not every scooter is built for a seat. Don't buy a seat that isn't officially made for your model, or you'll end up with a wobble problem or damage the frame.
The legal side in Switzerland
What you're allowed to ride depends on the speed and power of the specific model. It's not the same for every scooter, so check what applies to the model you want before you buy.
Seat or no seat: the short version
Without a seat: more compact, easier to store, sportier. Good for short trips and when space in the hallway or car boot is tight.
With a seat: more comfortable over time, less strain on legs and back, but bulkier. Worth it from a certain trip length.
Suitable models
At Swiss Scoots, the models with a sturdier frame and good range are best suited for a seat, for example from the KuKirin or Boyueda range. Check each product page to see whether a seat is already included or can be added later.
